So far Magic Mike has grossed 36 million (that’s domestic and foreign)
Budget was 14 million. So it’s made back it’s money. Audience is 96% women. Channing and the male cast are selling this sequel. What of Amber Heard though?
Nothing has changed. From bad reviews to movie goers stating that every time she came on screen the audience groaned.
“Amber Heard (Drive Angry, Machete Kills), by comparison, serves a narrative purpose similar to Cody Horn’s in the first Magic Mike; her character, Zoe, isn’t so interesting compared to those around her” screenrant.com
“More often, though, the actors flounder in half-scripted scenes. Tatum’s ad-libbed flirtations with Amber Heard, who plays a sullen bisexual named Zoe, go nowhere” newsday.com
“Jada Pinkett Smith, Andie MacDowell, Amber Heard and Elizabeth Banks were brought on board to balance out the testosterone (and to provide more well rounded female characters than the first flick), but they were hardly the centerpiece of the movie’s marketing campaign.”
Most sequels have lower expectations, but critics certainly thought something was off. The original earned a 72 on Metacritic and 80% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. “XXL” came in with an OK 60 grade and a 62% comparatively. Audiences seem more interested as the flick initially earned an A- Cinemascore, but those polls are done opening day when the hardcore fans are at the theater.

“Mike’s banter with Zoe “is so wooly and unfocused that I never did figure out who she was supposed to be.” According to Edelstein, the film feels as if it were “thrown together quickly and shot on the fly.” eonline.com
