Then and Now

21 Jun

Although we don’t have a lot of documentation that is current, we know from movie profits, there’s been a lot of disinterest in Depp in the last 3 years. However I can show you where he stood in 2009.

(Thanks Raven for the documents) This will be updated as the evening progresses with more information.

Johnny Depp Flops Again, ‘Captain America’ Sequel Rises Past its Predecessor

Subject: Trade screening reactions to “Transcendence” from the field

Transcendence had somewhat negative reactions, with most calling it confusing and lacking in excitement.  Buyers feel the film will fare best with an upscale male audience(especially techie types) and may be able to find female viewers that are fans of Johnny Depp, but don’t expect too much interest from anyone else.  Even with Johnny Depp’s last three films underperforming (The Rum Diary- $13M, Dark Shadows- $78M, The Lone Ranger- $89M) and a story this isn’t easily accessible to many potential audience members, exhibitors still estimate an opening over $20M and finale in the $75M range, but foresee the possibility of the final total being much lower

Subject: RE: Reliable Wife

Yes, I did. I also send the below note to the key territories about a year ago….to reiterate, not the script, just the coverage. Their responses are attached. Personally I liked it for its originality, but the combination of ‘sophisticated’ and ‘period setting’ may well limit international upside. Hope this helps.

Dear All,

You may recall that A RELIABLE WIFE was one of the projects that Doug and Hannah included in their upcoming slate presentation in Las Vegas.

Based on the book by Robert Goolrick (see link below), this is a romantic thriller with a twist set at the turn of the 20th century. Not confirmed, and in confidence, we are hopeful that Johnny Depp will take on the role of Truitt. Sam Taylor Johnson, who directed ‘Nowhere Boy’

One Response to “Then and Now”

That last e-mail shows how Depp’s decisions and choices are affected by the coat-tailers. Dread the day when this ‘Angelina wannabe’ psycho gets her end means – producing movies and make Depp star in them

Depp’s star has dimmed mainly because of his vain, self absorbed choices in terms of movies with alternative being quick paycheck jobs.

People, including me, watch what I want to watch. If a Depp movie seems entertaining it will be watched irrespective of whether he is an asshole or not.

When Depp calls the audience his boss one wonders whether what goes through his mind these day- the responsibility of actually entertaining them or just getting ‘his stupid money’.

He did Crybaby to mock his heathrob image. And more than two decades later he seems to be in a never-ending journey self amusement. Even if Black Mass provides respite it will take lot more for people to see again that he actually means to amuse someone other than himself.

“As Marlon once so beautifully f*cking said to me, life is a birdsong. That’s stuck with me. What is really satisfying is, like Marlon, getting to that place where he just didn’t give a f*ck.
First, I reached a point where I cared so much and was so diligent in terms of approaching the work. Then you get to where you care so f**king much that it gets goddamn beleaguering, you know?
But then a great thing happens. Suddenly you care enough to not give a f**k, because not giving a f**k, that’s the total liberation. Being game to try anything.”
    -Johnny Depp
